Annual Physical Exams: What to Expect and Why They Matter

July 14, 2026 4 min read

Annual wellness visits are about far more than checking vitals. Here's a detailed look at what a thorough physical exam covers — and why skipping it can cost more than it saves.

In a busy world, scheduling an annual physical exam can feel like a low priority — especially when you feel fine. But preventive care is fundamentally designed for people who feel well. The entire point is to detect what cannot yet be felt: high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, early-stage diabetes, thyroid abnormalities, and other silent conditions that are far more treatable when caught before they cause symptoms.

A comprehensive annual physical at Family Medicine & Rehab typically includes a full review of your medical history, measurement of height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, and pulse, head-to-toe physical examination, age-appropriate cancer screenings (including colorectal, cervical, breast, and prostate), laboratory bloodwork (CBC, metabolic panel, lipid panel, A1C, and thyroid function), and a review of all current medications and supplements.

Beyond the clinical components, the annual exam is a structured opportunity to discuss health goals, behavioral changes, mental health, sexual health, and any symptoms that might otherwise be dismissed as "not worth mentioning." Our physicians take time to listen — a practice we consider non-negotiable.

Medicare covers one Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) per year at no cost to eligible beneficiaries. This visit focuses on preventive planning and differs from a traditional physical exam, but serves as an important complement to it. Ask our front desk team about what your specific plan covers.

We recommend scheduling your annual exam at the same time each year so it becomes a healthy habit rather than a reactive measure. Call (904) 771-1116 or visit our patient form page to get started. Walk-in appointments are also welcome on Fridays.
