Vaccinations Are Vital in Helping to Protect Our At-Risk Populations
Annual flu vaccinations remain one of the most effective and cost-efficient tools to protect vulnerable community members — including seniors, young children, and immunocompromised individuals.
Every flu season, healthcare providers issue the same reminder: get vaccinated. Yet vaccination rates remain frustratingly low among many of the groups who need protection the most. Adults over 65, children under five, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or compromised immune systems face the greatest risk of severe influenza complications.
The influenza virus mutates rapidly, which is why a new vaccine is formulated each year based on surveillance data from around the globe. Receiving the flu shot annually is not redundant — it is essential. Studies consistently show that vaccinated individuals who do contract influenza experience milder symptoms, shorter illness duration, and are significantly less likely to be hospitalized.
"When you get vaccinated, you are protecting not only yourself but the people around you who may be too young or too sick to receive the vaccine themselves," explained Dr. Hussain at Family Medicine & Rehab. "This concept of community immunity is one of the cornerstones of public health."
Beyond influenza, our clinic strongly encourages patients to stay current with all recommended vaccinations, including pneumococcal vaccines for adults 65 and older, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) boosters, and shingles (zoster) vaccines for those over 50. Medicare Part B covers many of these vaccines at no cost to eligible beneficiaries.
Family Medicine & Rehab offers annual flu shots for patients of all ages throughout the fall and winter seasons. Walk-ins are welcome on Fridays. Call (904) 771-1116 to confirm vaccine availability or to schedule a dedicated vaccination appointment.
